Abstract
One approach to extend the process limits in bulk forming is to superimpose a high-frequency oscillation on the tool movement. This so-called ultrasonic assistance (US) leads to an immediate reduction of the material's flow stress and therefore to decreased tool and workpiece loads. The research project is focused on the underlying mechanisms of the flow stress reduction and the effects on the material flow behavior. In oscillation superimposed shear tests, it was found that the cyclic loading and unloading promotes the crack initiation and thus leads to earlier material failure. Hence, the formability of the material C35E is reduced by the ultrasonic assistance.
